Reading Notes: Ramayana, Part D

The Bridge

- Rama performed sacrifices so that vanar forces would pass over to Lanka
- this was done to propitiate the God of the Ocean
- since this didnt work out, Rama seized his bow and shot weapons to the deep
- earth and sea were mad and darkness flooded the heavens
- lightning, thunder, breaking of mountains started to take place
- Rama seized a fiery dart and threatened to dry up the waters of the sea
- King of the Ocean rose along with shining water snakes
- addressed that Rama must go with the laws
- son of Vishwakarman = Nala = vanar chief
- divine artisan = Nala
- Nala was called upon for help
- constructed a causeway of rocky islands between the mainland and Lanka
- Rama's Bridge --> came to be known as
- Rama set up linga symbol of god Shiva
- worshipped on the island and called Rameshwaram

Rama Attacks

- earth shook causing clouds to rain down blood and a fiery circle fell from the sun
- monkeys roared at the rakshasas
- Rama beheld Lanka which was built by Vishvakarman
- Sita was still prisoned
- Ravana's spies sent in monkey form to spy and gather info
- was not successful so he let go of the spies
- Ravana took counsel first to betray Sita to his will
- told her that the monkey host was dispersed and Rama was slain
- told her that Rama's head and bow was with him
- messenger came in calling Ravana to battle
- when Ravana left, head and bow of Rama vanished
- Sita found out it was illusions that made up the head

Indrajit

- monkeys swarmed the walls for battle
- monkeys on team Rama and Sugriva
- rakshasas sailed forward and joined battle with monkeys
- rakshasas waited for night battle and devoured monkeys
- Rama's party rallied
- Indrajit = son of Ravana was beaten back
- resorted to magic
- used his invisibility
- showered deadly wounding arrows on Rama and Lakshmana
- bound them that they fell helpless to the ground with wounds
- Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana, leaders of the monkeys had sympathy for those who had fallen
- Indrajit let loose a shaft that wounded Hanuman, Nila and Jambavan
- Indrajit returned to Lanka as a victor
- welcomed by his parents and the fighting took a halt
- Vibhishana rallied the monkeys and comforted Sugriva
- Ravana takes Sita in his car
- shows Sita Rama and Lakshmana lying on the field during battle
- Sugriva comforted them and gave them courage
- Monkey chief = Sushena
- sons of Dasharatha were healed
- came to their former strength and radiance

Kumbhakarna

- rakshasas were desperate for Kumbhakarana = mightiest of all demons
- he terrorized the universe and devoured humans
- defeated Indra at one point
- during his sleep nights, he was not able to be waken up
- rakshasas informed Kumbhakarna of the army that surrounded the city
- brought him food and he ate it all along with humans
- apes were scared to be around him since he wanted to eat everything
- Sugriva rallied the apes and defeated Hanuman while seizing Sugriva
- carried him in his chariot
- Kumbhakarna went against Rama and conflict arose
- result was that Rama sent fired arrows at Kumbhakarna
- this ended up taking his head off of his body
- Kumbhakarna ended up falling into the ocean

The Mountain

- Prince Indrajit vowed to slay Rama and Lakshmana to his father
- offered libations and sacrificed a goat
- bestowed a brahma weapon on Indrajit
- Indrajit returned victorious to Lanka
- Vibhishana and Hanuman ranged the field
- Hanuman sprang and passed over the sea till he got to Himalaya
- ranged the mountain and returned to Lanka
- the slain rakshasas were cast into the sea

Ravana and Lakshmana

- Ravana hastened towards the Ashoka grove to slay Sita
- rakshasa concealed the wife of Rama
- Ravana mounted his chariot against his enemies
- he behled his brother Vibhishana for fighting Rama
- casted him at a great weapon
- Lakshmana rose up and healed himself
- Rama rejoiced and turned against his foes
- night attack was made against the rakshasa capital
- apes intercepted a sacrifice which Ravana had to offer up to the gods
- many mansions were up in flames







The Heaven King God known as Indra sent his chariot which had a flag that was raised on the gold pole. The body of the chariot was beautifully wrought with gold and was adorned with hundreds of tinkling bells. The driver of the chariot was Lord Indra and Matali who was seated on the Sarthi seat.
