Week 14 Story : The Fosters

Author's Note : Stef Foster and Lena Adams, a lesbian couple, have a big, happy family of foster, biological and adopted children. Mariana and Jesus, siblings, are adopted thirteen year old twins that the couple have taken in. Brandon is Stef's fifteen year old biological son who the couple keeps as she has rights from a previous marriage. Fifteen year old, Callie and ten year old, Jude are the new comers into the Foster household who are also biological siblings but are placed in this household as foster children. As they have been moving in and out of homes and have not stayed in a stable household, things begin to happen relating to emotion, fights, etc. The Fosters deal with many different issues such as romances that spring about, break ups that take place, hook ups, life lessons, etc. and somehow, they overcome it all.

Callie is Lena and Stef's eldest daughter, half sister to Jude, adoptive sister to Brandon, Jesus and Mariana. The court places Callie in the Adams-Foster household after getting out of the juvenile detention center for destroying her abusive father's property.

Brandon is the eldest Foster child, the biological son of Stef and Mike, two cops, adoptive brother to Jesus and Mariana, Jude and Callie. Brandon has a strong infatuation for Callie and it is reciprocated between the two. After Stef finds out that Brandon and Callie had sex the night before her adoption, his biological mother and father place a restraining order against him as this is very messy for foster children. Brandon turns his focus to music and excels in piano leaving him on the verge of getting a scholarship into the world renowned, prestige, distinguished music program. He raises money to pay his way through the school by selling fake IDs to get into a bar even though he is legally underage to do so and ends up getting beaten up by his dealer.

Following his hospitalization, Brandon starts to lose sensation in his hand which results in him losing his spot in the music program. Brandon continues to practice and practice until he is able to somewhat play piano and he ends up joining a band. Later on as time passes, Brandon ends up going to a band camp and competes to play at Disney Hall. He ends up winning the competition and lives out his dream.

Senior year of high school comes around for both Callie and Brandon, and Brandon ends up receiving an acceptance letter into the Julliard School of Music, his ultimate top choice of college and the most prestigious school known for its finest music and fine arts students. Brandon gets in and right when everything seems to be going right, he is academically dismissed from attending any college altogether as an anonymous student discloses information stating that Brandon was bribed to take his educational assessment college entrance exam along with the issues that arise with Callie.

With Brandon's help, Callie goes and rescues Jude, her brother, who is still in the abusive household. Because of this, Callie starts to crush on her foster brother, Brandon, very quickly. As romance is not allowed between foster siblings, Callie attempts to run away as she was scared that the court will take her and Jude out of the Fosters' house and place them back into foster care where the conditions were unbearable. In her attempt to run away, Callie ends up stopping at a gas station for a pitstop and eats food from the gas station and heads out without paying for it. This gets her put into a counseling group that is temporary which will allow her to counsel her actions and to talk through them to ultimately keep her away from Brandon as well. This time away from Brandon only strengthens the feelings between them both.

As time passes, Callie and Brandon are inseparable but they hold back their feelings for each other as they know the consequences that will take place if people are aware of their chemistry. Callie's adoption is on hold when the family finds out that she and Jude do not share the same birth father.

Later, a man named Robert Quinn ends up on the Adams-Foster family door and Callie comes to realize that he is Callie's biological father. Robert introduces her to his wife and daughter, Sophia. Callie and Sophia bond quickly and become really close suddenly. As Robert decides to sign over his paternal rights to the Fosters, Sophia tears up the paperwork hoping that Callie is reciprocating the feelings Sophia feels about their newly found sibling bond, but in contrast, it ends up being the complete opposite. Stef and Lena end up officially adopting Callie after a lengthy and prolonged battle with the justice system followed by a passionate and emotional speech to the judge.

  1. Hi Asha! I really liked this. I've seen the show and so it was neat to see a recap. However, is there a way it ties into this class? I may have missed it, but adding a reason to the authors note would be nice. I was hoping for more in the authors note, or even a recap at the end to clarify. However, it was wonderfully written. I hope you've had a good semester!

  2. Hi Asha! I really liked this story! Your writing was great and it had a really nice flow to it. I have always been interested in watching The Fosters tv series. Is it any good? Is it a favorite tv series of yours? I also found it hard to figure out what story you were recreating, but that is my only critique. I hope that you had a great semester! Good luck with finals!

  3. Hi Asha! I like that your Author's Note is at the top of the passage instead of the bottom. I feel like this a great way to get your reader's attention and ensure that as they read they can refer to the Note as a guide. I have never seen The Foster's, which I gather is the TV series that you drew inspiration from for this story, but it seems quite complex! With so many characters it was hard to keep track who was who and what their relationship to each other was. Likewise, whether you had any Indian epic related references or intended them is difficult to tell. I'm not sure if it's required that a connection must be made in Story posts like this, but this is something I might check in with our professor about! Otherwise, very interesting story- something I didn't expect was a story with such a twisting plot!
