Reading Notes: Mahabharata, Part C

- Pandava princes went into the forest while Draupadi followed
- Yudhishthira also followed
- Surya joined the forest and gave him food
- Pandavas have lived in the woods for 12 years
- with wives Draupadi and Dhaumya
- visited holy shrines

- bathed in sacred waters
- did all the devotions
- dwelt in pleasant places
- went around fruits and flowers
- Ganga agreed to being his wife if he was good to her
- gave birth to a son and sent him to the Ganges
- king couldn't say anything or else she would leave him
- Ganga killed seven of their children
- on the 8th, king Shantanu spoke up breaking the vow
- she revealed her true self to the king before leaving

- Devavrata: 8th child's name
- gave him to the king and departed for good
- maiden was Satyavati who was adopted by her reputed sire
- fish carried two unborn babies and she was one
- father was a great raja
- everyone was aware of Satyavati's beauty
- brahmin Parashara wanted to be the father of her children
- Satyavati became a virgin and a good smell followed her
- her father refused to give her up for marriage
- he only agreed if she was heir to the throne
- Shantanu disagreed since Devavrata was next in line
- Shantanu walked away broken hearted

- Krishna returned to kingdom
- Arjuna took vows of austerity
- promised to return back to the kingdom
- left to the Himalayas
- Arjuna's penance started heating up
- performed morning worship
- offered flowers to little clay god
- Arjuna didnt notice the commotion
- shot an arrow and hit the boar
- huntsman was accompanied by queen
- decided to battle for it
- couldnt battle since their bows were getting swallowed
- decided to wrestle it out
- turned to worship rather than fighting
- Great God gave Arjuna the divine bow
- Kirat-Arjuna is the vision of Mahadeva
- Mahadeva is the Great God known as Kirata
- Kirata is the huntsman

- Indra: king of gods
- Varuna: god of waters
- Yama: king of the dead
- Kubera: lord of treasures
- Arjuna gave gifts of weapons
- celestial Swarga is where Indra transported his son
- beheld sea born apsaras
- apsaras = brides of gods and heroes
- music loving gandharvas sang songs
- also danced merrily
- Urvashi = fair apsara with bright eyes and silken hair
- Kama = god of love
- demons and giants named Daityas & Danavas
- ancient enemies of Indra
- Patala = underworld beneath the floor of the ocean
- Matali was the driver

- Arjuna eager for battle
- daityas and danavas quaked with terror
- chanted mantras
- shot clouds of bright arrows
- sent fire against him and water as well
- Arjuna reached the city of Hiranyapura
- went on mighty chariots
- Indra praised his warrior son for his valor
- gave him chain of gold
- also gave him a diadem and then the war shell
- this allowed him to blast forward to thunder


Mahabharata and Arjuna this picture depicts the commotion and the fights that Arjuna and Indra went through and faced along with other gods and chariots symbolizing power when heading to battle.
